What has changed on the network — a dated log
Every official change that affected service, fares or hours, newest first, with a clear mark separating what is in force today from what has only been announced. Announced projects do not appear on the map or in the route planner until they actually open.

200 million passengers
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced that the network has reached 200 million passenger journeys — double the figure recorded just seven months earlier. The daily average is now above 370,000 riders. What it means for you: heavier crowding at the two peaks, particularly on the Blue Line.

Red Line extension to Diriyah Gate awarded
The contract to design and build an 8.4 km extension from King Saud University to the Diriyah Gate development, with five new stations — 7.1 km of it in tunnel and 1.3 km on viaduct — went to a Webuild-led consortium with L&T, NESMA and Alstom. One station is planned as a future interchange with Line 7. What it means for you: nothing yet. This is a contract award, not an opening: the extension is under construction and appears neither on the current network map nor in the route planner.

Annual pass and student semester ticket prices
The annual pass at SAR 1,260 in Regular class and SAR 3,150 in First class came into force, alongside a student semester ticket at SAR 260 valid for four months from activation. All of them are issued on the darb card. Announced in late December 2025. What it means for you: the prices are up to date on the tickets page.

First phase of Line 7
Line 7 is planned at around 65 km with 19 stations (14 underground, 5 elevated), linking Diriyah Gate to Qiddiya by way of King Salman Park and Misk City. It entered tendering and early implementation during 2026. What it means for you: nothing yet — no opening date has been announced, and the network running today is six lines.

Operating hours settled at 05:30
The transport authority confirmed that the metro runs 05:30 to 00:00 Saturday to Thursday and 10:00 to 00:00 on Friday. These are the hours in force today. What it means for you: the detail is on the timings page.

100 million passengers in under nine months
The network reached 100 million riders less than nine months after opening. The split: Blue Line about 46.5 million, Red 17 million, Orange 12 million, and the three remaining lines around 24.5 million between them. Punctuality was 99.78%. The busiest stations were Qasr Al Hokm, KAFD, stc and the National Museum — over 29% of all ridership.

Why other sites quote different numbers
The hours: 05:30 or 06:00?
Several sites publish a 06:00 start and 08:00 on Friday. The transport authority’s own announcement says 05:30 Saturday to Thursday and 10:00 on Friday, which is what we follow here. The other figures most likely come from an older schedule that was never updated.
Station count: 83, 84 or 85?
The numbers differ because interchanges get counted twice: the official open data holds 94 records (station × line) which resolve to 83 unique stations. We count unique stations, because that is what matters when you are planning a journey.
Network length and future lines
The network running today is 176 km across six lines. The larger figures you sometimes read add the Diriyah extension or Line 7, and neither has opened.

The official, real-time source for service status is the darb app and the official channels of the Riyadh Public Transport Authority, along with the station screens and the call centre on 19933, available 24/7.
